About Me

I’m a single 62 year-old white guy, young at heart (I like to think), trying to keep up with technology.  My daughter tries to help me but there’s only so much she can do given what she has to work with (me).  As much as I dig some of the new technology, part of me is still rooted in the past;  I still use fountain pens, for example, especially my Pilot (Namiki) Vanishing Point pens.  I even go to pen shows.  Yep, I’m a nib nerd.

I’m also kind of stuck on music from the 60s and 70s.  I realize there’s really good new stuff to listen to but just can’t keep up with all the bands (with the exceptions of Prosser, The Crying Shame and Delay).  And alot of it just sounds like screaming to me.  I prefer lyrics I can understand sung in a musical way.  Besides, it looks stupid for old guys to show up at venues where 99.9% of the people are under 30.  The music industry has kind of pissed me off, too.  They keep changing formats right about the time I finally catch up with all the hardware needed to play the format being superceded.  I was fine with vinyl and could’ve spent the rest of my days spinning LPs.  In fact, I had just purchased a nice, new turntable when suddenly they came out with audio cassettes.  And then it was CDs.  And now its MP3s and iPods.  I give up already.  Mostly I listen to talk radio but sometimes will veer off station for a little bluegrass, jazz or classical.

I have about a gazillion interests, at least one of which might qualify for hobby status: photography.  Some others are pens (again), stationery, kites, bicycling, hiking, Frisbee, hand tools, geography, maps, geology, early aviation, WWII nose art, personal improvement (including organization), archery, firearms (though I’m not a hunter), reading, writing (duh!), old postage stamps, and maps, to mention a few.

Fortunately, I don’t have a Palm Pilot, Treo or Blackberry.  I think about the former but then wonder about batteries and synching with my computer and all that crap.  Part of me really wants to start living with less.  Sometimes I think we Americans are missing the entire point of life.  More and more I’m beginning to think it’s not about money; it’s not about toys; it’s not about being entertained 24/7.

This “about me” page is a work-in-progress.  I’m stopping for now but will add to it as I begin to add content to my site. Ooops, I mean blog.
